Visitors to Regain Access to Gwillim Lake Next Spring

TUMBLER RIDGE - After a flood-related closure last summer, nearby Gwillim Lake Provincial Park is scheduled to re-open in time for the May 2012 long weekend.

Why this matters:

  • A temporary bridge will allow access next spring until a permanent structure is constructed in July 2012 after flooding collapsed the only access road and damaged drainage culverts.
  • To ensure park access remains open BC Parks will replace the culverts with a structure built to withstand future flooding events.

Quotes:

“Having this park access out of commission has created hardship in our region. It’s important that we maintain access to this important recreational area as it contributes to the quality of life of families and tourists alike.”
- Peace River South MLA Blair Lekstrom

“We realize this delay poses an inconvenience for park users but we are trying to avoid this happening again in the future. We want to ensure that any new structure is a long-term solution that will address flooding and allow seasonal access to the park.”
-Environment Minister Terry Lake

Project details:

  • The construction schedule will take into consideration weather conditions such as spring flooding and an optimal fisheries window, i.e., the best time to build that has the least impact on fish.
  • Located about midway between Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd, Gwillim Lake is popular among locals for fishing, kayaking and camping.
  • Weather dependent, the park usually opens around May 1st and closes at the end of September.
