Chetwynd Bioenergy Project = Clean Energy & Local Jobs

CHETWYND - BC Hydro is adding enough clean, renewable electricity to power 70,000 homes annually thanks, in part, to one new bioenergy project in Chetwynd.

Why this matters:

  • Chetwynd Forest Industries Biomass will produce 12 megawatts of capacity and 88 gigawatt hours of firm energy per year.
  • Projects like these help develop sustainable communities and create jobs. These projects will require capital spending of more than $300 million and will create approximately 1,500 person years of employment.

Quote:

"This type of project will help communities like Chetwynd become a part of B.C.'s growing clean energy sector and will make the area more sustainable, while reducing impacts on the environment."
-Peace River South MLA Blair Lekstrom

Additional information:

  • These projects were chosen under the second phase of the Bioenergy Call for Power.  BC Hydro launched the second phase of the Bioenergy Call for Power in the spring of 2010.
  • The new clean energy projects will produce electricity using sawmill and manufacturing debris, roadside debris, logging slash, sort yard debris and biomass derived from standing timber.
  • The projects are important to BC Hydro’s efforts to acquire clean, renewable and cost-effective energy.
  • A total of four projects were selected for phase two of the program. The other projects are located in Fraser Lake, Fort St. James and Merritt.
  • In total, these projects will represent more than 750 gigawatt hours a year and 104 megawatts of capacity.  The energy produced will be enough to meet the annual needs of about 70,000 homes.
  • It is anticipated the projects will be in-service by November 01, 2016.
  • With the addition of these projects, BC Hydro will have a total of 16 bioenergy electricity purchase agreements, representing 3,300 gigawatt hours per year of contracted energy.
